A dental Filling is used to restore the cavity procedure or missing tooth structure. The structural loss may be in some cases done intentionally during a tooth preparation to improve the physical integrity of the restorative material.
It can also make a function of missing tooth structure which is supported by dental implants.
They are made with nickel-chrome alloy, Silver amalgam or in some cases Tooth colored (depending on the look you may want). Their strength and durability is not as high as porcelain or metal restorations and they are more prone to wear and discoloration.
Composites and Amalgam are used mainly for direct restoration. Composites can be made of color matching the tooth, and surface can be polished after placed.
Fillings have an average of 12.8 years for amalgam and 7.8 years for composite resins.
